The only way to build your skills is by practicing, but how do you know what to practice, and how do you know if you are improving? Melodics will analyse every performance and provide you with real-time feedback on how well you’re playing and how fast you’re progressing. Strap in, because we’re going to give you a behind the scenes look into how Melodics scores your performances, and how you can make the most of feedback so you can improve your skills quickly.

Leveling up.

Your level represents your experience playing Melodics™. For every lesson you pass, you will be rewarded with one, two, or three stars based on your performance. These stars will increase your level, so the more you play and the better your performances, the quicker you will gain experience.

Levelling up

Your level is tracked separately per instrument so you can keep track of your progress on keys, pads, and drums individually. You can view your level on the top right next to your avatar, and you can get a more detailed look into how many stars are required to level up on the home screen.

There is no limit to your level. As more content is added to Melodics™, there’s more opportunity to level up.

Lesson grading and difficulty level.

Grading

Every Melodics lesson has a grade which represents the difficulty level. It doesn’t matter what level you are, you can play any grade you feel comfortable with. For keys, pads, and drums lessons, the easiest lessons start at grade one. As you work your way up through the grades, lessons will get more complex, tolerances will get tighter, and your skills will undoubtedly get better.

You can browse lessons by grade in the lessons screen. Choose ‘grade’ in the ‘browse by’ dropdown menu. Skip to the grade that matches your ability.

Get in the flow.

Get in the flow

The ideal grade to learn is something at your ‘edge’, where the task is hard enough to be a challenge, but not so hard that you become frustrated, and not so easy that it becomes boring. It’s different for everyone, so we recommend starting at grade one to see how you go, and then slowly increase the grade you play until you find something challenging and fun.

Scoring & feedback.

Every lesson gives you real-time feedback about your performance. When you play a note you’ll see it represented on screen in a number of different ways – this is what they mean:

Color

Means

Orange

= Played note early.

Purple

= Played note late.

Green

= Played note perfectly!

Red

= Missed note (note wasn’t played)

Red dot

= Misplayed note (you played a note that wasn’t in the arrangement)

New for Acoustic Drums:

Transparent Green

= Played note perfectly in time, but Melodics isn't quite sure which drum you played. Counts as a perfect note.

After each performance, you will be given a score out of 100. This score is based on how many perfect, early, and late notes you played vs how many missed and misplayed notes. At the beginning of the lesson, your score is nil. As you perform the lesson, perfect notes increase your score a lot, early and late notes increase your score a little, and missed and misplayed notes take points off your final score.

Get those note streaks going.

Play at least four perfect notes in a row and you’ll be on a streak. Miss a note and your streak will be broken. While streaks themselves don’t have an effect on your final score, you should try and keep that streak going to get a perfect score.

Note streaks & platinum stars

Always losing your note streak in the same spot? Jump into practice mode and set a loop over the difficult section. Reduce the tempo, and use auto BPM to slowly increase the speed as you feel comfortable.

Aim for perfection.

Even if you get 100/100 perfect notes, if you additionally misplay any notes at any time during the performance, your score will be decreased and you will not get a perfect score. If you perfect a lesson, i.e, all green notes and no misplayed notes, you will be awarded three fancy platinum stars. Congratulations, you have aced this lesson. Time to step it up!

For beginners, don’t worry, we’ll take it easy on you for a start. Misplayed notes will not affect your score in grades one to four. Just focus on getting all the notes you’re supposed to play right. Once you’re ready, we’ll increase the difficulty and start penalising you for playing wrong notes in grade five lessons and above, or when you’re level five and above – whichever comes first.

Keeping track of your progress.

It’s important to understand how well you are progressing. After completing your performance, the ‘recent performances’ graph will compare your previous scores. The graph will give you insight into if you are making good progress with each play through, or if you need to change it up.

Upwards trend

Seeing an upwards trend?

Great job, you’re improving with each play through. Keep it up and see if you can get a perfect score.

Getting only high scores?

Nice work, but this lesson might be a bit too easy for you. Try finding a higher grade lesson that’s a bit more challenging.

Graph going down?

Oops. Looks like you started strong but you’ve been going downhill since. You might need to take a break and give your fingers a rest. Try going back to an easier grade and work your way back up to this one.

Unable to improve on low scores?

You might need to try playing an easier lesson. Or jump into practice mode and slow down the tempo to give you more time to get it right.
