Playlist: Studio as an Instrument.

Melodics’ Director of Education Rodi Kirk curates a diverse selection of music that have one thing in common – the creative use of studio technology sits at the heart of the musical process.

Can you identify the creative role the studio plays in each of these songs?

Delia Derbyshire’s pioneering work used raw recordings of real world sounds and early synthesis (before synths were even being manufactured). Ben Frost uses extreme compression to make a bowed cello sound like a snarling wolf.

Listen for time based FX.

King Tubby’s music is soaked in echo and reverb. Tim Hecker uses infinitely repeating echoes and then manipulates their speed.

Also listen for sampling and playback manipulation.

Check out 10CC layering multiple vocal recordings to form harmonies, Burial’s use of texture and environmental sounds and the long slow decay of William Basinski’s Disintegration Loops.
